dr ISRAEL is a Brooklyn-based revolutionary artist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter, with releases on ROIR, Wordsound, and MOD Technologies. The dr’s work has always had a foundation in the deep tradition of dub, dancehall, and reggae. But what makes him stand out is his ability to fuse a sonically devastating bass and politically conscious baritone, with drum and bass, hip hop, even punk and metal. He has collaborated with Bill Laswell, Mad Professor, Lee Perry, Dr No, Sepultura, Rancid, Sublime, Bernie Worrell, and DJ Krush, to name a few, and has received accolades from Rolling Stone, Vibe, L.A. Times, and Village Voice. Following up on a long and fruitful discography that includes the underground hit album Inna City Pressure, and Dreadtone International, and the chart topping Patterns of War, he has sung and written for Bill Laswell’s project, Method of Defiance’s Jahbulon, and Lee Scratch Perry’s Rise Again.
In 2012, the dr will launch an ongoing series of releases, titled “The Liberation Chronicles.” The first of those, whose release we’ll be celebrating at DUB MISSION on January 1st, is Ghetto Defendant, which will be available digitally and for free on that date at drisrael.bandcamp.com. Told through the music and various media related to the project, the story depicts the victory of creativity and love over politics and violence. Viva La Revolution!

GHETTO DEFENDANT is an EP of brand new tracks (featuring special guests Killah Priest, Lady K, and Katrina Blackstone) stays true to dr ISRAEL’s prior albums, fusing roots and dub with modern elements, to create a unique fusion of genres. From drum & bass, to rock, to hip-hop, to electronica, all of dr’s past releases have maintained a fresh quality that once again flourishes on Ghetto Defendant. The concept of the Ghetto Defendant, and related forthcoming releases, is to communicate an ongoing story to listeners. Told through the music and various media related to the project, the story depicts the victory of creativity and love over politics and violence. It’s the story of man vs. machine, revolutionary vs. empire. It’s a post apocalyptic tale of a dreadlocked insurrectionist battling an evil corporate machine within its own maligned jurisdiction. It’s an anecdote of rebellion and struggle for the 21st century. Ghetto Defendant will be the first release in the series titled “The Liberation Chronicles,” which will also include the upcoming full length album Love in a Time of Violence, due out Fall 2012.

PRESS:
A history lesson and foretelling prophecy to the suburban rude-boys and girls looking for the futuristic, afro-mythic dub versions on The Clash. –URB
The doctor really understands what dub, jungle, punk, metal and reggae have in common, and is demonstrably skilled
enough to make them work together. In doing so, he drives home musical points that an army of hack critics haven’t yet been able to figure out…a rock and a hip-hop fan can groove to this. –NY Press
The most fully realized statement from the underground massive in quite some time. –VIBE
Suffused in gritty urban poetry, a sense of humor, a surprising respect for hard rock ….and a deeply rooted sense of spirituality, records such as Inna City Pressure rise above the base elements of today’s stoned-slow reggae, melody-deficient hip hop, songless electronica, and crotch-grabbing Korn-metal. –Village Voice
Inna City Pressure is a world music masterpiece. –CMJ
Inna City Pressure is as catchy a fusion of dub-ragga weirdness and power-chorded rock as you’ll ever hear…Original & inspiring. –Rolling Stone
